Organize learning materials in collections, use them in private or share with others
Creating and structuring your own collections - sorting materials to facilitate the retrieval of learning materials. You can collect privately, with colleagues or in community. Decide who has which permission in your collection.
Use materials in connected LMS and tools with legal certainty
Plug-ins for learning platforms and tools make edu-sharing features, such as search and collections, widely available to their users. In this way, materials and tools accessed via edu-sharing can be found, embedded and used in all connected learning management systems and e-learning tools. Inserted materials directly bring with them the correct license information and metadata from the repository.
Administration content in the "safe"
The safe is an additional secured area with a second password especially for materials that require protection. The access can be controlled via user roles or rights, so that, for example, only teachers are allowed in the safe. If you are inactive in the safe for a few minutes, you will be automatically logged out.
With editorially maintained collections, curricula are also displayed and enriched with materials. Public or protected syllabi can be browsed by topics and competences.Try collections →
Search engine: search once - find it everywhere
We offer a high-performance search engine that uses all of its internal file stores, libraries and even external sources (eg YouTube, German Digital Library, Pixabay, etc.) or imported materials (eg from Elixir, ZUM-Wiki, Serlo, FWU, etc.). ) searches. Reusable found materials can be sorted into collections, imported into workspaces, or used in plugged-in LMS.Search engine demo →
Display learning content only for authorized users in the format that can be played on their device - that's what the edu-sharing rendering service does. It automatically supplements metadata or legally prescribed information, such as author and license. So media in all affiliated learning platforms, Wikis u.a. Systems displayed correctly. Existing conversion modules for audio, video, image, SCORM, QTI tests or Moodle courses can be supplemented by your own specialist formats.
App for iOS & Android
The edu-sharing app makes it easy to collect and share learning content when you're on the go. Own photos can be uploaded directly into the workspaces and sorted into collections. The collection of interesting web links is fast and easy.

edu-sharing supports collaboration in authoring teams and quality assurance in editorial departments or peers. The object is assigned the next workflow step and responsible. This way, the entire processing history is documented on the object. The final status "tested" can be used as a seal of quality.
Working together on online documents
Through our connector to OnlyOffice, users can work online on materials (text documents, spreadsheets and presentations) - even at the same time. Changes made by a user to the document are also directly visible to contributors. The materials are stored and versioned in the own workspace. From here the documents with the required permissions can be released.
- educational metadata
(e.g. education, type of school, subject, etc.)
- Inheritance of metadata on materials in folders and collections
- configurable, flexible metadata sets
(e.g. by field or target group)
- Support by LOM, Dublin Core, import / mapping by LOM, EAF, ELIXIER
- customizable metadata import and mapping functions
- metadata generation and metadata collection from the usage, generation of thumbnails
Individual release for individuals or groups
Also, when releasing materials, retain control over who and who is allowed to contribute to their material and how. The assigned rights to folders and collections can easily be inherited to content. At any time, you have an overview of which users and groups have which permissions on their materials, can customize them and even see the history (who had what and when). Materials can also be shared across organizations.
edu-sharing network drive (WebDAV)
You can work in file management on your PC or MAC with the edu-sharing file, as you are used to locally. Of course, the local authoring tools can be used. Such edited materials are automatically stored in the online authoring environment. Despite local editing without the online metadata capture metadata can be generated automatically - through inheritance from the folder.
Integration with learning platforms and tools
Using edu-sharing plug-ins, you can use centrally stored materials in your learning platforms, such as Moodle and ILIAS, or in MediaWiki. In addition, online authoring tools are available in the authoring environment, eg OnlyOffice for collaborative work on documents and the ONYX editor for creating tests, questionnaires and tasks in the IMS QTI standard.Learn more about connected tools →
Use different types of licenses (Creative Commons, Public domain, copyright licenses, and more) and choose the right license through an easy-to-use license wizard. Once indicated on the material and the license will be supplied and displayed in all connected working environments when reusing the material via the rendering service.Try license assignment →
Flexible user management (LDAP, Shibboleth & SSO)
edu-sharing can be based on existing user administrations to automatically take over users, groups and organizations. Alternatively, an edu-sharing-internal user administration is possible or that of the leading learning management system can be taken over. Although organizations can be managed separately, cross-organizational sharing of materials is possible.
Groups, users, roles, rights
Administration concepts for educational institutions are easily reproduced thanks to many years of experience in the field of education:
- edu-sharing-internal administration for users, groups, organizations
- Composition of individual entitlements to roles
- Automations for user and group administration as well as authorizations
Folder templates as templates for schools
Pre-structured folder structures for new organizational units (school in the school cloud / professorship in the university) can be created automatically with the corresponding authorizations based on configurable templates.
edu-sharing uses an extensive REST API based on the OpenAPI Specification (OAS). The community directs the further development of the API through user projects.
Rights management without limits
Control of rights, such as:
- Who is allowed to license and manage licenses?
- Who may share and invite
- Who is allowed to release across organizations?
- Who is allowed to enter the safe?
Rights management can vary depending on roles or organizational / group affiliations as well as by individual configuration.
Open source system with strong community
edu-sharing is open source and can be customized by its IT experts. Further development priorities and quality assurance are organized by the community (edu-sharing NETWORK e.V.). While the service partnership ensures the competing availability of services for customization and operation, edu-sharing.com ensures the synergetic development through partner communities.
Host yourself: documentation & docker
edu-sharing can be installed on own servers and adapted to own requirements. Installation aids are available as documentation and Docker images. Installation support and training can be booked with service partners. An admin documentation supports the operation.
User documentation & support
Our public user documentation is updated with each release. An individual documentation variant and user support can be ordered from service partners.
Adaptable to own requirements and compliance
edu-sharing adapts itself to your context visually as well as functionally:
- Configurability of user, group, role and rights management
- Customization of surfaces to your own corporate design
- metadata sets and import mappings, as well as interfaces for metadata deployment
- Compliance adjustments, eg for data protection, content licensing, publication
- Workflow adjustment for work / editorial workflows
- Public OER offer of educational institution can be switched on / off

More for editorial teams and "sharing"Improved collections; Editorial tools; connect, find, and use new LTI tools
Simple, stable and safe
Powerful, scalable technologies with standardized interfaces (eg REST, OAI-PMH, SOAP) enable large entities, for example at the state level. Criteria for selecting Alfresco for the repository (Java technologies) were scalability, reliability, deployment in large professional user circles, service provider network, customizability and more. Criteria. The rendering service follows with its proven, cluster-enabled PHP stack the most widely used e-learning systems (Moodle, Mediawiki). Content sources, content-using e-learning systems and authoring tools are connected via standardized interfaces (API, OAI-PMH, LTI, etc.).
